Some bacteria, viruses, fungal infections, and parasites can be transmitted through sexual activity, leading to infections known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Signs of a sexually transmitted infection may include itching, burning, or discharge in the genital area. Fortunately, most STIs are either curable or can be effectively treated.
For each sexually transmitted infections STI, we will provide a description of the infection, including how it is transmitted, its symptoms, and potential consequences. We will discuss when testing is appropriate and the methods used for testing. Treatment options will be outlined, along with whether individuals who test positive can discontinue condom use during treatment. Additionally, we will cover prevention strategies and whether sexual partners should also receive treatment.
